Commercial Publishers

These publishers buy manuscripts and pay royalties. In some circumstances authors or organizations may share in the cost of production.

University Presses

These publishers operate like commercial publishers, but often take on works of literary merit where a commercial publisher wouldn't take the risk.

Subsidy Publishers

These publishers typically ask authors to pay all or part of the cost of production.

Specialty Publishers

This category includes specialty publishers and publishers who may be commercial or subsidy. Some may no longer be in business.
